It's probably not a good idea to battle stronger monsters if
the current ones are trouncing you at 50% but apart from
being an indicator of your ability does a low win rate affect
any other aspects of the game ?

While permanently Vysn is correct and nothing changes, I wouldn't recommend it. You get 0 xp/gold for a death. If your fighting 50% win rate your gaining a small % per kill over an easier level, but only killing a little over half as many as something in the 90s win rate.

I would suggest going for 98 - 99% win rate before moving on to next area, where you should initially have not less than 95%
